Part of the inevitable trajectory of any pop culture phenomenon like the Occupy Wall Street movement is that it will get co-opted as Madison Avenue and Hollywood try to figure out how to turn a profit on rebellion. The business model of taking Leftist, anti-capitalist passion and turning it into consumer products has a rich history; it’s made Michael Moore a multi-millionaire; it’s created designed Che T-Shirts and purses, and now we have late-night host Conan O’Brien launching a contest called Occupy Conan.
No, this isn’t some ploy to get co-host Andy Richter to sexually assault an unshowered Conan. It’s a fairly tame and slightly lame contest in which viewers are asked to re-create an episode of the Conan O’Brien show. O’Brien explains it all in this slightly ponderous video. The contest ends January 4th and of course, it has a sponsor: the 60’s chic Volkswagen Beetle…although today’s Beetle convertible has a base price of around $30,000.
Occupy Conan is harmless enough. It’s really just a strained attempt to find a name for a contest. I’ll give the Red Headed One a pass on this, especially since the Conan show did one of the funniest take downs of the Occupy Movement outside of…well, the Occupy Movement itself.
Forget re-creations: take ten minutes and watch Conan (sporting his Al Gore inspired retirement beard) and Triumph the Insult Comic Dog hold Occupy up to the light…for you to poop on.
