“Betty White … reporting for duty!”
It’s what some Obama boosters would love to see during this week’s Democratic National Convention. The GOP made plenty of noise last week when it invited film icon Clint Eastwood to address the RNC in Tampa.
If you see empty chairs in your neighborhood today, you know just how effective Eastwood’s speech was to the passionate Republican base.
Democrats want to fight elderly fire with fire, and recruiting a sassy senior like White might do the trick.
The 90-year-old star, who’s an Obama supporter, is not scheduled to appear, but there’s a petition circulating online urging White to introduce the president on Thursday.
“Governor Romney can have Clint Eastwood and his improvisational skills because President Obama has the one and only Betty White!” the petition reads. It’s been signed by more than 2,500 people on Change.org.
White has even more fans asking for the speech on Facebook, where nearly 20,000 have “liked” the page titled “Bring Betty White to the DNC.”
Far be it from us to to say anything untoward about the delightful White, but this discussion is precisely why President Obama remains in deep trouble regarding his re-election chances.
Shouldn’t Obama and his acolytes be working on selling the president’s first term successes and sculpting new job initiatives to get the unemployment rate below 8 percent?
Then again, maybe White is the party’s best chance at changing the subject for a precious day or two.
