New Wave band Devo will release a song portraying Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney as cruel to animals.
The song, titled “Don’t Roof Rack Me, Bro (Remember Seamus),” sends up an incident where Romney placed an Irish setter named Seamus in a kennel on the roof of his car while driving his family off to vacation. The dog defecated during the trip, and Romney washed him and the car off at a gas station. Rolling Stone reports the song will be published later this month.
The song’s announcement coincides with a recent joke made by President Obama at an Iowa campaign stop. The incumbent Democrat, responding to a Romney statement on energy, retorted, “That’s what he said about wind power: ‘You can’t drive a car with a windmill on it.’ I don’t know if he’s actually tried that. I know he’s had other things on his car.”
At least one member of Devo believes that Romney’s 29 year-old car trip should be a central issue in the election:
Devo founder and commercial director, Gerald V. Casale, is a major proponent of the late Seamus, even starting a ‘Remember Seamus campaign’ aimed to “go off leash by choosing a non-human as the most important political figure of this election. Make 2012 the year where animals like Seamus are valued and honestly praised,” according to the campaign’s website.
The band has a long history of progressive social satire; its name is derived from its members’ distaste for American society, which they believe is in a cycle of “de-evolution.”
Devo’s popularity peaked with the 1980 single “Whip It,” released three years before Governor Romney’s road trip. Currently, lead singer Mark Mothersbaugh has a regular segment on the children’s show “Yo Gabba Gabba” drawing pictures for its young audience.
Obama’s joke and Devo’s song come seven months after the incident first made headlines in the Republican primary, thanks to an ad by Newt Gingrich’s campaign.
Seamus jokes hit a lull in April after the Daily Caller’s Jim Treacher highlighted a passage in Obama’s book Dreams from My Father revealing he ate dog meat as a child in Indonesia.
