New Progressive Health Care Doc to Bow Before Election Day

President Barack Obama tried – and failed – to convince the majority of Americans he has the right answer to mend the country’s health care system.

Now, progressive filmmakers are having a crack at it – just in time for Election Day.

“Escape Fire: The Fight to Rescue American Healthcare,” which debuted at January’s Sundance Film Festival, will hit theaters Oct. 5. Early reports indicate the film isn’t as strident or political as “Sicko,” Michael Moore’s imbalanced assault on the U.S. health care system. But this Variety review sums up the film’s message:

Both “Escape Fire” and “Sicko” observe the contradictions of medical treatment being turned into big business, but the message that health care should function outside a for-profit structure is better delivered here by medical professionals.

Films like “Escape Fire” will likely be seen by only a fraction of the voting public. But the press surrounding the film will likely be positive and widespread, sending the filmmakers’ message in a more productive fashion than the feature itself.
