'Chuck: The Complete Fifth Season' Review: Must Have for Buy More Fanatics

Despite having one of the most loyal and vocal fan bases in television history, the NBC action-comedy “Chuck” came to an end in January.

Tomorrow, fans can get one last taste of the series as “Chuck: The Complete Fifth Season” is released on DVD and Blu-ray. The set comes with some of the standard television DVD package fare. Along with all 13 season five episodes are the requisite gag reel, deleted scenes (dubbed “declassified” scenes) and audio commentary on the final two episodes by creators/producers Chris Fedak and Josh Schwartz with co-stars Zachary Levi and Joshua Gomez.

The truly special features are the behind the scenes looks at what went into making this series so special.

“Sandwiches and Superfans” is a tribute by the cast and crew to the fans who worked to keep the show on the air. Supporters were instrumental in bringing the series back from the chopping block on multiple occasions by using Twitter and a famous “Subway Sandwiches” campaign, which has since been co-opted by another NBC series, “Community.”

“Scoring the World of Chuck” takes viewers into composer Tim Jones’ studio where he explains the intricacies of developing each individual character’s unique sound, including that of the spy team’s hideout, Castle.

“Chuck Versus the Final Episode” is a look at the emotional filming of the final episode of the series. Fans will be interested to learn which macho cast member appears to cry more than everyone else, including the women.

“Chuck: The Beginnings” and “Chuck: The Future” take viewers back to where it all started for their favorite Nerd Herder and gets the cast’s opinion of where the characters end up in the future.

“Goodbye, Buy More” is an interesting time-lapse video of the tear down of the Buy More set, going from fully functioning electronics store to a bare soundstage.

The gem of the special features is “Chuck: Through the Years.” Viewers are taken through the evolution of Chuck (Zachary Levi), Sarah (Yvonne Strahovski), Morgan (Joshua Gomez) and John Casey (Big Hollywood’s own Adam Baldwin) over the series’ five-year run. Fans will see Chuck go from nerd to hero, Morgan go from slacker to spy and Casey get soft. (Imagine Casey grunt here.)

Co-creator/producer Josh Schwartz said that they “just wanted to put a smile on people’s faces.” That you did, sir. We only wish it would have been for many more years. This collection is a must-have for any fan of the show.
