Celebrities Support Trayvon Martin

The facts in the death of Florida teen Trayvon Martin have yet to be determined, but that isn’t stopping a cavalcade of celebrities from rendering a verdict in the case.

Social media venues like Twitter are the preferred venue for stars who want to have their say on a rather complicated, and heated, legal situation. Some stars typed out their 140 characters worth of support for the fallen teen. Others used Twitter to demand local law enforcement brush past procedure to arrest George Zimmerman, the man who says he shot and killed Martin in self defense.

And then there were others, like Spike Lee and Roseanne Barr, who used Twitter to let their followers know where Zimmerman or members of his family could be found – even if they didn’t bother to check whether the information was accurate or not.

P Diddy used Twitter to share his support for the late Florida teen, requesting his Twitter followers sign a petition demanding justice. Rapper Nelly also implored his fans to sign the petition.

Former “View” co-host Star Jones, who claims to be a legal eagle herself, cited MSNBC’s own Rev. Al Sharpton in her Tweets demanding justice for Martin.

Will Ferrell took time out from impersonating President George W. Bush to add his thoughts to the Twitterverse: “I live n a country where a chick that threw flour on Kim Kardashian was arrested on site But the man who KILLED Trayvon Martin is still free.”

Apples, meet oranges.

Other celebrities, including Diddy, Jamie Foxx and Swizz Beatz, Tweeted pictures of themselves wearing hoodies to show their support for Martin, who was wearing a hoodie according to press reports on that tragic night.

Not to be outdone, actress Mia Farrow used her Twitter feed to declare, “It’s not safe for a black male to walk in the streets of America,” as if one tragedy was enough for to make such a blanket statement.

Let’s be clear. A young man is dead under mysterious circumstances, and when the dust settles we may know enough to decide with certainty how Zimmerman should be punished, if at all. But celebrities are making matters worse by rushing to judgment without knowing all the pertinent information on the case.
