In the all-too-familiar pattern of Hollywood figures bellyaching about politicians’ denunciation of Tinseltown’s agenda, Tony winner Kristin Chenoweth, the star of ABC’s new series “GCB,” protested Newt Gingrich’s rebuke of the show. “GCB,” which is based on the book Good Christian Bitches, by Kim Gatlin, revolves around less-then-upstanding Christian women in Texas. Gingrich, speaking in Gulfport, Mississippi, said:
Look at the new show that’s on that has the word ‘Christian’ in it, and I want you to take the exact name, drop out Christian and put in ‘Muslim.’ And ask yourself is there any network that would have dared to run a show like that and you know the answer is not a one because anti-Christian bigotry is just fine in the entertainment industry but they have to be very protective of Islam.
Chenoweth responded by saying, “I was like, ‘No, Newt, don’t talk about my show! I would never do anything that would make fun of my own religion! I don’t think [‘GCB’] does that.” “GCB” has featured Chenoweth singing “Jesus Takes the Wheel” to cruelly remind another character of her husband’s death in a car crash while having oral sex performed on him by his girlfriend, as well as gossiping , “Ladies, it is not appropriate to speak of such things on the phone–I’ll see you in church!”
Chenoweth has, in the past, appeared with Piers Morgan on CNN and differed with Michele Bachmann on the issue of gay marriage. Clearly she doesn’t believe that entertainers should stay away from politics the same way politicians should stay away from entertainment. Her criticism of Gingrich is the height of hypocrisy–and it’s absolutely typical in Tinseltown.
