'Atlas Shrugged: Part I' Hits Home Video Today

Ayn Rand devotees finally got to hear the question they’ve been reading in print for the past 50-plus years: “Who is John Galt?”

“Atlas Shrugged: Part I,” the long-awaited film adaptation of Rand’s celebrated tome, arrives on Blu-ray and DVD today after its spring theatrical release.

The film follows a driven capitalist (Taylor Schilling) trying to save her family’s railroad company by using an experimental metal. Governmental regulations, and the disappearance of several noteworthy innovators, threaten to derail her ambitions.

“Atlas Shrugged: Part II” will begin production in 2012, but for now Rand fans can savor the original feature along with a quarter of home video extras:


  • Road to Atlas Shrugged” – A look at author Ayn Rand and how her writing still inspires a new generation of politically aware readers. “It sparked the idea that man is a heroic … and success is something I need not feel guilty about,” says writer/producer John Aglialoro, who bought the film rights to the novel back in 1992.
  • I Am John Galt” – The social media outreach effort prior to the movie’s release yielded a series of fan-made videos repeating the book’s iconic quote.
  • The John Galt Theme” Slideshow – A virtual gallery from the film’s set.
  • Commentary from Aglialoro, screenwriter Brian Patrick O’Toole and producer Harmon Kaslow. – The brain trust behind the film share anecdotes from the production.
