Nearly 20,000 individuals have signed an online petition calling for the resignation of United Airlines CEO Oscar Munoz following his response to an incident in which a passenger was forcibly removed from a flight after boarding due to overbooking.
Videos from the incident, which went viral on social media, have had a significant effect on the company. On Tuesday, the airline’s stock price dropped 3.7 percent, erasing nearly $1 billion from the firm’s market cap.
United CEO Oscar Munoz received backlash his internal memo on the incident was published online. In the memo, Munoz largely blamed the passenger, claiming that he was curious as to “why this customer defied Chicago Aviation Security Officers the way he did.”
A petition calling for Munoz’s resignation has nearly 20,000 signatures, as of Tuesday afternoon. The petition demands that Munoz should “step down for this injustice.”
United overbooked a flight from Chicago to Lousiville and instead of upping the dollar amount on the vouchers to get people to volunteer to take another flight, they “randomly” selected passengers and made them get off. When they chose a doctor who needed to be on that flight so he could see patients the next day, he refused. Instead of requesting someone else to switch flights,United called Chicago PD and the man was dragged off the flight!
United could not have handled this situation any worse. Demand United’s CEO Oscar Munoz step down for this injustice!
