Dr. Cory Edgar, a physician at UConn Health, was arrested Thursday after police alleged he intentionally coughed on other medical employees.
UConn police said Edgar was “deliberately coughing on and hugging nurses, causing them a substantial amount of alarm.” The act is said to have occurred in front of several witnesses.
In addition to being a physician, Edgar serves as an assistant professor of orthopedic surgery at the UConn Musculoskeletal Institute.
He was issued a misdemeanor breach of peace summons. He has been asked to appear in Hartford Community Court on June 3rd.
UConn Health said it will launch an investigation into the alleged incident.
UConn Health spokeswoman Jennifer Walker said in a statement:
The involved doctor has confirmed that he is in excellent health and does not to his knowledge have COVID-19. We can also state that any UConn Health employee with an indication of illness is asked to stay home, and during this pandemic all employees are screened for symptoms prior to entering the premises.
It is unclear whether Edgar is infected with the virus.
Connecticut has over 1,000, coronavirus cases and 21 deaths as of Friday, according to data tracked by the Hartford Courant.
