Consider Sen. Doug Jones (D-AL) not in favor of President Donald Trump’s remarks contrasting the solution to the coronavirus pandemic with the pandemic itself.
On Monday, Trump publicly echoed a sentiment he shared in a tweet suggesting that the dangers of the cure could be worse than the problem.
“We can’t have the cure be worse than the problem,” Trump said. “We have to open our country because that causes problems that, in my opinion, could be far bigger problems.”
In an interview that aired Tuesday on Huntsville, AL radio’s WVNN, Jones criticized Trump for the remarks, arguing the statement was inconsistent with what scientists and health care officials were saying.
“I think it was dumb of the president to say it,” Jones said on “The Jeff Poor Show.” “I’m just going to be candid about it. It was not consistent with anything the scientists are saying. It’s not consistent with anything the health care officials in Alabama, from Huntsville to Mobile — there is no one saying that except people that are losing money in their stock portfolio. It really angers me to hear the president say it. And then for people to take that as gospel because the only way — this is a health crisis. If we can get past the health crisis, we will then get past the economic crisis.”
“They are connected,” he continued. “You cannot separate those two. And it is crazy to think — this is not the meltdown of 2008 and that great recession. This is creating serious problems with the health of Americans. It is creating serious problems with people’s health worldwide. And I think those comments are just irresponsible.”
