During Monday’s “New Day” on CNN, Sen. Chris Coons (D-DE) was asked about his role in former Vice President Joe Biden, a 2020 Democratic presidential hopeful, changing his stance on the Hyde Amendment.
Host Alisyn Camerota pointed out a report said Coons had a role in Biden’s changing stance, to which Coons shot down.
“He didn’t need me to persuade him,” he told Camerota.
Coons said Biden’s changed stance is a result of President Donald Trump appointing conservative judges to the Supreme Court, District Court and Circuit Court, as well as states passing “extreme” abortion laws.
“I think this was an important moment for [Biden] to look at the ways in which the Republicans changed the environment we are serving in,” Coons added. “It is just in the last few weeks that states like Georgia have passed, not just laws outlawing abortion, but outlawing abortion in all cases, including incest and rape where it has become more extreme than it’s ever been in our lifetimes.”
