Monday on MSNBC’s “Hardball,” Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) said President Donald Trump should be impeached because he is acting like an “authoritarian leader” by not cooperating with congressional investigations.
Booker said, “I have to say when you have a president that is not even allowing Congressional investigations to happen, I mean, he is flaunting the law. He is basically saying more like an authoritarian leader ‘I am subject to no oversight, not the checks and balances of the Constitution.’ I literally had a heart-to-heart with my own team in the Senate office and said how is history going to look back on this? When a president was willing to violate the mandates of the Constitution, subject himself to checks and balances. He’s basically shut that down, not allowing subpoenas, not allowing interviews.”
He added, “I’m sorry, forget about the politics of the situation. What will history say when we have a president who acted in such an authoritarian fashion? We should begin impeachment proceedings to have even more legal leverage to actually provide the oversight that is Congress’ job. We’ll see what that leads to.”
