During an interview that aired Monday on CBS’s “This Morning,” Gov. Ralph Northam (D-VA) discussed his awkward press conference to clarify the blackface photo that appeared in a college yearbook.
In the press conference, Northam admitted to wearing blackface to look more like Michael Jackson, and even learning to moonwalk. A reporter went on to ask Northam if he can still moonwalk, and Northam appeared ready to give it a try.
But Northam on Monday told “This Morning” co-host Gayle King that he was not about to bust out the moonwalk, saying it was an “inappropriate” time.
Partial transcript as follows:
KING: For many of us watching, it looked like you were about to actually demonstrate the moonwalk. Were you thinking about showing off your moonwalking skills?
NORTHAM: No.
KING: No?
NORTHAM: Because I don’t have those at age 59. But I will tell you, Gayle, I regret that. This is a serious moment.
KING: Yes, it’s very serious.
NORTHAM: And whether it was a nervous laugh or whatever, it was inappropriate.
KING: So, you weren’t thinking about doing it when you looked over at the floor? You were not thinking about doing a moonwalk?”
NORTHAM: No.
