Monday on CNN’s “New Day,” Rep. Dan Kildee (D-MI) addressed the ongoing government shutdown talks, which reportedly have stalled over a dispute about a proposal to reduce the number of beds at Immigrations and Customs Enforcement facilities near the U.S.-Mexico border.
The Michigan Democrat argued the move was justified given that President Donald Trump has “abused” his authority to detain people at the border.
“All I can say is this is a priority for us,” Kildee said. “The president, I think — and I think many of us believe this — has abused the ability to detain people who are not a danger but to do it in a way that is intended essentially to be punitive to those people who are coming here to seek safe harbor.”
Kildee went on to say such a limit would force the administration to “prioritize” the use of the beds for violent offenders.
