Monday on CNN’s “Newsroom,” network political analyst Kirsten Powers said there wasn’t “that much difference” between President Donald Trump and embattled Rep. Steve King (R-IA).
Powers commented while discussing Trump not condemning King’s controversial comments by saying, “I haven’t been following it. I really haven’t been following it,” when asked.
Powers said, “I’m sure he knows.”
King said in an interview last week, “White nationalist, white supremacist, Western civilization—how did that language become offensive?”
Powers continued, “Whenever he’s given an opportunity to condemn racism, he chooses not to, or he does both sides, fine people on both sides, or during the campaign, when the alt-right was saying all sorts things and being a huge supporter his, just declined to condemn them.”
She said, “One of the questions we should all be asking when we are talking about Steve King is—what’s the difference between him and Donald Trump? There’s not that much difference.”
She added, “So this is a much bigger problem for the Republican party than just a few comments.”
