Friday on CNN’s “New Day,” Sen. Chris Coons (D-DE) voiced his concern with Secretary of Defense James Mattis’ resignation.
Coons praised Mattis’ leadership and experience and said it “will be difficult” for President Donald Trump to find someone comparable to replace him.
“This is a chilling moment,” Coons told host Alisyn Camerota. “I think it will be difficult for President Trump to secure the service of a comparably skilled, seasoned and respected leader in national security.”
He continued, “Democrats and Republicans may have policy differences, but all of us want our nation to be secure. And that means relying on our alliances and having a clear-eyed view of our adversaries. Secretary Mattis certainly put that first and foremost in his incredible, dedicated service to our nation. And I am very concerned that President Trump will begin working on his worst instincts in foreign policy and national security without the guiding hand of Secretary Mattis at the helm.”
