Sunday on MSNBC’s “Live,” former Gov. Howard Dean (D-VT) said the Republican Party under President Donald Trump “has now taken on the same meaning as evangelical Christianity with young people, intolerance, bigotry and a lack of respect, not just for women but for anybody who is not on their team.”
Dean said, “I think you are going to see, finally, a surge of young people going out and voting. I think it’s going to make a big difference. This is there country that these 80-year-old white Republicans are ruining.”
He continued, “I think this is the party of Trump, and I think it’s going to be the end of the Republican party as we know it, and I think that’s a great thing. I can’t imagine someone who is under 35 voting for Donald Trump. It’s not just about the anti-woman and all that stuff and how divisive he is. These guys are thugs. They’re doing a victory dance which —how does that make these young people feel? Got rid of climate change, oppose choice, denigrates women, that’s what the Republican party has bought into in the Senate. Whether we like it or whether we wish the party were different, all the people who I like in the Republican party, and believe it or not there are some, are going right along with Donald Trump which makes them complicit. So I think the Republican Party is going to have to rise from the ashes, and I think there is going to be a big fire over there.”
He added, “I think it will be the end of this Republican Party. Coming back with young people, they’re going to be more libertarian than the left wing of the Democratic Party about economics, but they are going to be socially, extremely tolerant. And the Republican party has now taken on the same meaning as Evangelical Christianity with young people, intolerance, bigotry and a lack of respect, not just for women but for anybody who is not on their team. That’s what the brand of the Republican Party is now, and they’re going to have to change dramatically.”
