During a Saturday debate on MSNBC’s “AM Joy” about Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy’s retirement and who President Donald Trump will pick as his replacement, ACLU national legal director David Cole warned a Trump selection could move the Supreme Court “far to the right” of American society.
“The key is that Justice Kennedy was who kept the Supreme Court within somewhere within the mainstream of American society,” Cole argued. “If Trump gets to appoint another rigid, right-wing ideologue, the court will be far to the right of the country for a generation to come. And that, to me, that’s the key issue. we ought to be thinking about what role this justice is going to play in keeping the Supreme Court within the mainstream of American society.”
