GOP Rep Dent: ‘Most of Us Recognize’ Firing Mueller ‘Would Be the Equivalent of a Saturday Night Massacre’

On Tuesday’s broadcast of MSNBC’s “Hardball,” Representative Charlie Dent (R-PA) stated that the Congressional Republicans he has spoken to believe firing Special Counsel Robert Meuller “would be a devastating mistake” and “most of us recognize this would be the equivalent of a Saturday Night Massacre, an Archibald Cox moment, if you will.”

Dent said, “Well, I’ll tell you what, at least the Republican colleagues I’ve been speaking with think it would be a devastating mistake for the president to fire Director Mueller under any circumstances. I think most of us recognize this would be the equivalent of a Saturday Night Massacre, an Archibald Cox moment, if you will. It would be politically paralyzing, even more so than we already are, debilitating, and I just don’t know how he’d be able to function. … So, I think he has to trust Director Mueller and let him do his work. He’s a man of honor and integrity.”

He later added that firing Mueller would be “a politically catastrophic error for the president. I don’t know if it’s a legally catastrophic one. But politically, it would be devastating.”
