On this weekend’s episode of “The McLaughlin Group,” conservative commentator Pat Buchanan batted down allegations based on the so-called Steele dossier that Trump campaign colluded with Russia to sway the outcome of the 2016 presidential election.
Buchanan, in a response to co-panelist Eleanor Clift, said noted the anti-Trump bias of dossier author former MI6 intelligence officer Christopher Steele and downplayed any role former Trump campaign associate Carter Page might have had regarding those allegations.
According to Buchanan, Page “was not Alger Hiss,” the former federal bureaucrat accused of being a spy for the Soviet Union in 1948 and convicted of perjury in 1950 for his testimony regarding those accusations.
“[Steele] had a pre-existing hatred of Donald Trump,” Buchanan said. “OK, this dossier relied upon — according to McCabe himself — indispensably on a dirt-diving operation by a British spy using Russian agents. And the FBI used this material to go after an individual. Carter Page is not Alger Hiss!”
