Wednesday at a press conference, United States Conference of Mayors president and New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu (D) said he would not attend a White House meeting of mayors because the Justice Department sent letters to sanctuary cities threatening to issue subpoenas if they do not confirm that they are complying with federal immigration law.
Landrieu said, “I cannot in good conscience as President of the United States Conference of Mayors go to a meeting under false pretenses to talk about infrastructure and have this letter issued today at 12:00. ”
He added, “I don’t think that that would send the right message and as I said, an attack on one of our cities … is an attack on all of us, so I will not be attending the meeting.”
