Tuesday on MSNBC’s “All In,” host Chris Hayes challenged Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) on President Donald Trump’s comments referring to some nations as “shithole countries” in an immigration policy meeting with a bipartisan group of lawmakers last week.
Hayes pressed Gaetz on how he might react if he called Okaloosa County, FL, Gaetz’s home county, “a shithole.”
“I could also prove you wrong,” Gaetz replied. “I could bring you to Okaloosa County and show you that it is the home of the most beautiful beaches in America. I don’t know if Haiti can make the same claim.”
Gaetz continued to defend Trump’s decision to characterize Haiti and other nations as such, adding that it wasn’t a term he would have used.
“I would not pick those terms, but I would say that the conditions in Haiti are deplorable,” he added. “They are disgusting — I mean, everywhere you look in Haiti, it’s sheet metal and garbage when I was there.”
