According to a report from CNBC’s Jacob Pramuk and Eamon Javers, President Donald Trump adviser Gary Cohn said on Friday that he would continue to serve in the White House at least for the short-term, which quashed rumors that Cohn might return to the private sector after Republicans passed tax reform.
Cohn said to CNBC, “I’m here today, and I’m here next week,” although, he did not say whether he will leave past next week.
Javers followed up on the report later on CNBC’s “Power Lunch,” saying Cohn was “very cheerful” and “upbeat” and offer “no indication” of departure from the Trump administration.
Some have speculated whether Cohn would exit after Republicans passed the historic Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. But Cohn suggested that he will continue to serve the White House in December.
“The last year of my life has probably been the most fascinating that I’ve ever had,” Cohn told Axios reporter Mike Allen.
Gary Cohn was one of the top candidates to serve as the chairman of the Federal Reserve. However, Cohn became increasingly alienated after the former Goldman Sachs executive criticized the president’s comments about the violence in Charlottesville, Virginia. Cohn’s lifelong membership in the Democratic Party and his time at Goldman Sachs earned him the moniker “Globalist Gary.”
Cohn also told CNBC that President Donald Trump would meet with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), House Speaker Paul Ryan and other members of Republican leadership at Camp David this weekend to discuss congressional Republican’s 2018 agenda.
Cohn suggested that Republicans could pursue a massive infrastructure package or welfare reform, or both at the same time.
In Michael Wolff’s book “Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House,” Wolff claimed that Cohn called Trump “dumb as sh*t.”
Cohn denied making those remarks and called the claim “ridiculous” according to Javers.
