On Wednesday’s broadcast of MSNBC’s “Hardball,” Representative Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) stated that President Trump will be held accountable only if Democrats control the House.
Host Chris Matthews asked, “If the special counsel comes in with what is basically an indictment of the president for obstruction of justice, do you believe the House Judiciary Committee will act on that and begin an impeachment proceeding? Will they do what they’re supposed to do?
Jeffries answered, “I don’t think that the House Judiciary Committee under Republican leadership will proceed in that fashion. As you know, Chris, we, constitutionally, are a separate and coequal branch of government. We don’t work for the president of the United States, Donald Trump. We work for the American people. but my colleagues on the other side of the aisle don’t seem to have gotten that memo, even though it was written by James Madison and the founders in the Constitution. The only way this president will be ever held accountable is if the gavel is in the hands of the Democratic Party.”
