Wednesday on MSNBC’s “MTP Daily,” Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) said while she believes the Senate would have no choice but to seat former Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice Roy Moore if he wins the special election in Alabama for U.S. Senate in December, a Senate ethics investigation could lead to his expulsion.
Collins said, “First let me say that I’ve never supported Roy Moore, even before all of the allegations of sexual abuse, because of his having twice been removed from the Supreme Court in Alabama. This is a decision for Alabama voters to make. And as I look at the case law and the Constitution, there are no grounds for refusing to seat him.”
“The only way you can do that is if he does not meet the constitutional requirements, which he clearly does,” she continued. “The issue of whether the ethics committee could hold an investigation that might lead to an expulsion resolution is a whole other issue, and I think we’re getting way ahead of ourselves.”
