Sunday on New York AM 970 radio’s “The Cats Roundtable,” Sen. Pat Toomey (R-PA) argued that there was “no good reason” why average taxpayers should have to pay a higher tax rate for cities “that choose to have high taxes.”

“There’s no good reason why federal taxpayers all across the country should have to subsidize, have to pay a higher federal tax rate, to subsidize those municipalities that choose to have high taxes,” Toomey told host John Catsimatidis.

He added that the new Senate bill does away with the federal tax deduction of up to $10,000 for local property taxes, which “allows us to lower the total tax burden.”

The GOP senator also said the Senate Finance Committee would like to “simplify” taxes.

“We’re going to lower taxes for middle-income and working families. We’re going to simplify taxes somewhat,” said Toomey. “It’s not quite as simplified as I might like, but it’s definitely going to be simpler than it is today.”
