On Friday’s broadcast of CNN’s “AC360,” CNN Senior Legal Analyst Jeffrey Toobin reacted to the news that the first charges have been filed in Robert Mueller’s investigation by saying the decision “pretty much guarantees” that the investigation will run “well into 2018, if not through the whole year and beyond.”

Toobin began by saying that the situation is “peculiar” because indictments usually aren’t announced without the defendant or charges named.

He continued by stating, “[I]n white-collar investigations, usually, the first indictments are against individuals that you hope will plead guilty and cooperate against others. … And the other point to make is that these white-collar cases take a long time, and it’s very unlikely that this case would even get to trial for 6 months to a year. So, if anybody thinks the Mueller investigation is going to be wrapping up in the next couple of months, this decision today pretty much guarantees that the Mueller office will be up and running well into 2018, if not through the whole year and beyond.”
