Thursday on MSNBC’s “ Live With Ali Velshi,” Breitbart senior editor-at-large Joel Pollak said President Donald Trump needed “to start whipping Congress into shape” in order to get the legislative wins required by the base to continue their support.
Partial transcript follows:
VELSHI: Let’s take a look at the latest Fox News poll shows the president’s approval at 38 percent. They put it higher than most. But that is four points down from September, disapproval rate at 57 percent, that’s up 4 since September. Now, look at the numbers among the president’s base, with white evangelicals still very high but down 8 points across the board, with evangelicals, whites without college degrees, conservative men and whites in general. What does that tell you?
POLLAK: It tells you the president needs some wins and he needs a win on tax reform. He needs to come out of the DACA negotiations with something the base will like. He needs to start whipping Congress into shape. That’s a task that the president has to be concerned, but it’s also a task that comes up when we talk about the 2018 mid-term elections. Republicans want representatives in the Senate and House that will work with the president, not against him. When you have senators and members of the House going out and attacking Trump in silly ways that don’t help either side of this debate, that’s when you start to see the public support fall off for both sides.
