Sen. Luther Strange (R-AL) distanced himself from troubled former Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley Friday, saying he only accepted his appointment as the state’s attorney general because he had the “very best public integrity team in the United States of America” in place.
“I was running long before the appointment was ever made — I was the only candidate running. And I was only able to accept the appointment because I had in the place the very best public integrity team in the United States of America,” Strange told Birmingham, AL’s CBS affiliate, WIAT.
He continued, “I empowered my team to follow the truth wherever it led and I knew that they would and that’s exactly what they did in that case. So, shortly after I took office in the Senate, the governor was removed from office, resigned. My office played a key role in that and I couldn’t be prouder of them, and so everything was handled very appropriately.”
