Cam Newton: ‘Unfair’ to Kaepernick That He Isn’t on an NFL Roster

In a press conference leading up to his team’s season opening matchup with the San Francisco 49ers, Carolina Panthers star quarterback Cam Newton said that it is “unfair” that former 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick remains a free agent.

Kaepernick protested the national anthem while leading his team to an abysmal 1-10 record as the starter in 2016, but Newton thinks the fellow former Super Bowl runner-up is still “good enough” to be on a roster in the league.

“In my opinion, do I think Kaepernick is better than some of these starting quarterbacks in this league? Absolutely,” Newton told reporters. “Should he be on a roster, in my opinion? Absolutely. There is no question about it.”

He added, “Is he good enough to be on a roster? Is he good enough to be a starting quarterback? Absolutely. But our main focus right now is trying to beat the 49ers on Sunday.”
