Monday in reaction to the weekend’s Charlottesville, VA, white nationalist protests, ESPN “First Take” co-host Stephen A. Smith said NFL owners “better change” their opinions on free agent quarterback Colin Kaepernick “quick, fast and in a hurry.”
Moderator Molly Qerim asked Smith if the violent protests will cause NFL owners to look at the national anthem protesting quarterback differently now.
“First of all, it should,” Smith responded. “I think to some degree it has, and I want to state for the record it damn sure better change the opinions of owners within the National Football League quick, fast and in a hurry.”
He later added, “[I]f the NFL owners, by the way who are white and billionaires outside of Shahid Khan in Jacksonville, they are white [and] they’re billionaires when you have people looking at our nation and who our president is, if you don’t act immediately and make sure you get Colin Kaepernick back in the NFL, you are going to have folks comparing those owners to what a lot of people think about our present Commander in Chief and that spells trouble for the National Football League. They’d better get it together.”
