Gingrich on Trump Criticizing McConnell: You Don’t Pick a Fight With a ‘Teammate’

Gingrich

Friday on the “Laura Ingraham Show,” former House Speaker Newt Gingrich criticized President Donald Trump’s criticism of Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) over the failed Obamacare repeal.

Gingrich said “I think it’s totally misplaced. And furthermore, McConnell’s going to still be there. You don’t pick a fight with a guy you need as a teammate—and they’re not going to replace McConnell. And so, I don’t understand what the President thinks he’s accomplishing.”

He continued, “I think the President has his instinct for being aggressive, and he’s unhappy, but he also doesn’t want to take responsibility. He talks about how Mitch has to get this done—well, this is a team. The President is a key member of the team. You could argue he’s the leader of the team, so if things aren’t working, maybe he needs to take part of the ownership here.”

He added, “We need to work as a team. We have tax cuts coming down the road. They have the debt ceiling coming down the road, and they have the budget coming down the road. All of these things require a Republican team in the House and the Senate as well as the presidency, and I don’t  see how this particular strategy gets them there.”
