Fox Sports 1’s “The Herd” host Colin Cowherd brought Jason Whitlock on his show Tuesday to discuss The Wall Street Journal article he wrote regarding former NFL star O.J. Simpson’s influence on Americans.
Last week, Simpson was granted parole after serving almost nine years in prison for armed robbery.
Whitkick told Cowherd that he believes black media personalities, athletes and celebrities are “too consumed” with not being Simpson that it has “perverted” the honest conversations about race.
“[T]oo many people in the media, particularly blacks and black celebrities and athletes, we are too consumed with not being O.J. Simpson,” Whitlock argued. “It’s like having a bad dad and thinking, ‘You know, I’m going to learn how to be a dad by being the opposite of my bad dad.’ That’s an ineffective route. You will make mistakes. You need a good example to model yourself after rather than a bad example. And O.J.’s had an enormous influence on black celebrities, black personalities, black media … because of the fear.”
Whitlock went on to say that some of these black personalities put up a “smokescreen” by acting like Malcolm X to cover up the fact that they are living a similar life to Simpson.
“It has perverted the conversation around race where you can’t have an honest, authentic, healthy conversation about race because too many people are posturing and saying things that they never say privately,” he continued.
