On Monday’s broadcast of MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) stated that the “specter of obstruction of justice” is raised by President Trump sending tweets designed to “threaten” special counsel Bob Mueller by raising issues of conflict of interest.

Blumenthal said, “My feeling is the better argument is on the side that he lacks that power, to pardon himself. And in fact, if he pardons assistants, it could well be regarded as an obstruction of justice, if done for improper reasons. But I feel he lacks the power to pardon himself. You know, he could be pardoning himself for all kinds of crimes that do not even relate to his official duties. And I think there are some limits on the pardon power.”

He also stated, “I have suggested repeatedly that the specter of obstruction of justice is becoming more real, with the tweets that are designed to intimidate and threaten the special prosecutor. Because he is engaging, right before our eyes, in real time, in efforts to threaten the special prosecutor by raising this issue of conflict of interest. And possibly going after him.”
