Wednesday on Fox News Channel’s “Tucker Carlson Tonight,” conservative commentator Mark Steyn disagreed with calls for unity among our politicians in the wake of the shooting in Alexandria, VA earlier in the day that has left House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-LA) in critical condition.
Instead, Steyn argued for “robust, civilized disunity,” given the policy differences within the country.
“I would actually like to disagree with the tone of what we have heard today, including in the last hour for Martha MacCallum and Brit Hume, when they were talking about unity and will this unity last and all the rest with,” Steyn said. “Obviously, the unity won’t last because ultimately, Rand Paul has very little that unites him with Bernie Sanders.”
“We don’t actually need unity,” he continued. “We need robust, civilized disunity. Where people honestly recognize that they disagree with each other on health care, on immigration, on Islam, on transgender bathrooms, and a bazillion other things. But that doesn’t make the other person a hater. And simply put, the left has to be willing to actually engage in debate with people that he disagrees with.”
