On Monday’s broadcast of CNN’s “OutFront,” Representative Luis Gutierrez commented on being handcuffed after refusing to leave an ICE office by stating that “somebody has to stand up for” DREAMers who “feel under threat, and they are under threat.”
Gutierrez said, “Look, there’s a lie, and the lie keeps repeating — keeps getting repeated, and that is that they’re going after criminals. They’re going after the bad people in the immigrant community. The fact is, they’re going after DREAMers. There were tweets out last Friday about that they’re no longer protected, and that they can be deported. Criminalizing them, of course, 750,000 strong, I mean, these are Americans, everything but a piece of paper.”
He added, “And so, what we did is we said, tell us it isn’t so. Well, then they tell us, well there really is a change in policy. Then we tell them, retract the tweets. So, look, somebody has to stand up for them. The fact is, that they are under threat. You can talk them. I’ve talked to them all of the time, and they feel under threat, and they are under threat.”
