During a discussion of the Affordable Care Act during MSNBC’s coverage of President Trump’s speech before Congress, anchor Chris Matthews wondered, “We’ve had presidents talking about healthcare since Teddy Roosevelt, Franklin Roosevelt. Richard Nixon was going to have an employer mandate. And finally, we get a guy that gets it into action. And how can you blame him for being the first guy to get something done?”
Matthews said, “We’ve had presidents talking about healthcare since Teddy Roosevelt, Franklin Roosevelt. Richard Nixon was going to have an employer mandate. And finally, we get a guy that gets it into action. And how can you blame him for being the first guy to get something done? I mean, I don’t understand, it’s like there’s some better plan that the Republicans had to put in? They had a better healthcare plan for working people? They had nothing. They voted against Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security. They voted against every one of these programs, and then they say, well, this isn’t quite what we were looking for. There’s couple flaws in this. … They had nothing to offer as an alternative, and never have, ever.”
