Monday on CNN International’s “Amanpour,” commenting on President-elect Donald Trump’s first UK interview with The Times of London, which covered several international issues, Secretary of State John Kerry said, “I thought frankly it was an inappropriate for a president-elect of the United States to be stepping into the politics of other country in a quite direct manner.”

KERRY: Well I thought frankly it was an inappropriate for a president-elect of the United States to be stepping into the politics of other country in a quite direct manner. He’ll have to speak to that as of Friday you know he’s responsible for that relationship. But I think we have to be very careful about suggesting that one of the strongest leaders in Europe and most important players with respect to where we are heading —made one mistake or another I don’t think it’s appropriate for us to be commenting on that
AMANPOUR: Your talking about Angela Merkel refugee policy which he did call catastrophic.
KERRY: He did call it that and I think that she was extremely courageous. I don’t think it amounts to that characterization at all. It has had some problems but everybody’s had some problems with this challenge of how do you respond appropriately is a big nation as a great nation, as the west were our values our principles are important with respect to caring for people who are in distress who are put into refugees status. We have a great history that. And we’ve seen what happens when we don’t do that. And so I think she’s been extraordinarily courageous. I think she’s been extraordinarily important to Europe as an entity. And we the Obama administration have valued her leadership enormously.
