Gingrich: Trump, Schumer in the ‘Name-Calling Phase,’ But Will Get Past It

Newt

Sunday on New York AM 970 radio’s “The Cats Roundtable,” former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said that while incoming Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and President-elect Donald Trump are currently in the “name-calling phase” of the political “game,” they will eventually work together to get deals done.

“[S]chumer has known Trump for a very long time,” Gingrich told host John Catsimatidis. “Right now they’re in a name-calling phase, but I think that’s because Schumer’s having to being nice to his base and they all want to fight Trump. They sort of told him that if he’s going to be their leader, he’s got to lead them in the fighting. And Trump is such a naturally aggressive person, if you pick a fight with him he goes crazy.”

He added, “He and Trump will ultimately get some deals done, but Schumer first has to convince his base and his activists that they can rely on him to fight.”
