On this weekend’s broadcast of “Fox News Sunday,”while discussing President-elect Donald Trump’s Thursday tweet saying the United States needs to “expand its nuclear capability” and MSNBC’s Mika Brzezinski later reporting that Trump told her, “Let it be an arms race,” former Speaker Newt Gingrich said President-elect Donald Trump was “exactly right,” for encouraging a strengthening the America’s nuclear capability.
Gingrich said, “This is the same Donald Trump that liberals were terrified was going to Putin, who’s now pivoted said, look — to quote General Mattis, “We can be your best friend, or we can be your worst enemy.” You want to make threatening speeches, let me show what a threatening speech looks like. And he does it in 140 characters. The truth is the Russians have rebuilding their nuclear capability. We’ve allowed our’s to weaken. The Chinese have been rebuilding their nuclear capability.”
“The North Koreans are trying to build a nuclear weapon to reach to reach the continental United States,” he continued. “The Iranians are trying to build a nuclear weapon. I think for the next president to say, you know, we have to rebuild our nuclear capability is exactly right. And if that — he’s also serving notice. If he succeeds economically in making America great again and we get back to 5 percent or 6 percent real growth, we can outproduce everybody. And I think what he’s telling both the Chinese and the Russians is, you really want to be in this competition, it’s going to be a competition, we have the potential to win it.”
