Wasserman Schultz: Hillary Won the ‘Hearts and Minds of a Majority of Voters’

Wednesday on MSNBC, while discussing potential messaging changes the Democratic party might need after President-elect Donald Trump’s victory, the former DNC Chair, Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL), said the Democratic Party needs to “not just throw the baby out with the bathwater,” because Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton won the popular vote, which means she “actually won the hearts and minds of a majority of voters.”

Wasserman Schultz said of the next DNC chair, “They need to make sure we can build on our grassroots success, and also not just throw the baby out with the bathwater. Let’s remember Hillary Clinton won the popular vote. We actually won the hearts and minds of a majority of voters. And we did a good job in many places at out-organizing and out-mobilizing the Republicans. Now we didn’t win the presidential election because we elect presidents through the Electoral College.”

“So making sure we take a good look at what we have done well, and building success on what we have not done well,” she continued. “One of those things is clearly not selling the agenda successfully, particularly to working and middle class Americans. And two, we didn’t promote well enough, or make sure Americans understand what we did achieve. Twenty million people who couldn’t afford health insurance before now have it. We rescued the automobile industry and had a million jobs that would have gone down the tubes that Republicans would have allowed to go down the tubes.”
