On Friday’s broadcast of HBO’s “Real Time,” host Bill Maher described a Trump administration as “fascism” because “cult of personality, with a dictator, and they don’t care about rule of law.” He further stated, “Hitler was elected? … And three months after he was elected, what did he do? He burned the Reichstag, to create an emergency, where he would get more power. Don’t you think they would have that in their minds?” And compared Republican attitudes towards Democratic presidential nominee former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to Rwanda in the 90s and the way the Nazis viewed Jews.
Maher said, “You’re thinking in the terms of someone who gets elected, and is going to abide by the rule of law. That’s not what these people will do. The reason why I use the word fascism is because, cult of personality, with a dictator, and they don’t care about rule of law.” Maher clarified that they meant Donald Trump as President, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie (R) as Attorney General, and former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani (R) as FBI Director.
He added, “You know that Hitler was elected? … And three months after he was elected, what did he do? He burned the Reichstag, to create an emergency, where he would get more power. Don’t you think they would have that in their minds?”
Maher further stated, “They don’t believe in politics or elections. They have proved it.”
He further argued, “We are unraveling at a very quick pace. There is a Senator, Ron Johnson (R)…talks about impeaching Hillary. … Fascists decide that you’re a criminal, then they find the crime. This is what they’ve done with Hillary Clinton. … The big lie. Trump is out there every day talking about, she’s under criminal investigation. No, she’s not.”
Maher concluded, “When you reach a point after we’ve had for like 20 years, where everything is so politicized that they’re going to impeach the person before they’ve gotten her into office. Where — put her in jail — what’s the chant? Lock her up? Now they’re saying to even execute her. We’ve gotten to this point where like, Rwanda was in the 90s, where the other is such vermin, like Hitler called the Jews and the Slavs, that, when you take power, you’re doing God’s work by eliminating your enemies. That’s what we are.”
