On Friday’s broadcast of PBS’ “Washington Week,” host Gwen Ifill claimed “we don’t actually hear Republicans talk that much over the years about poverty, though they do talk about crime.”

Ifill said, “Donald Trump, when he speaks of these issues, at least up until this week, he’s almost always cast these questions as a matter — especially in this so-called appeal to the African-American community, as matters of — questions of poverty and crime.  Now, it should be said we don’t actually hear Republicans talk that much over the years about poverty, though they do talk about crime.  Is that the only way that we talk about race in this campaign?”
