On Wednesday’s broadcast of CNN’s “New Day,” Deputy Secretary of State Antony Blinken stated that while the “overwhelming majority” of the money Iran has received under the sanctions relief in the Iran nuclear deal is going into their economy, not the military, “we can’t say” that none of it will go to financing terrorist groups.
Blinken said as part of the nuclear deal’s lifting of sanctions, “Iran is bringing back some of that money, but the overwhelming majority of that money is going into their economy, which is in dire straits. It’s not going to the military.”
He was asked, “Do you think that you could guarantee from the State Department to the American people that this doesn’t get filtered into groups like Hezbollah and other terrorist allies that Iran has, that not one dollar of it can go there?”
Blinken answered, “Well, we can’t say that not one single dollar will go there, but what we can say, based on what we’ve seen so far, is that virtually all of it is going into the economy, not into the military. And the bottom line is this, this agreement that we reached has made us safer. It’s put far into the future the day when Iran can get enough material for a nuclear weapon.”
He further stated that the money Iran is getting under sanctions relief is “going into the economy, not into the military.”
