ESPNW columnist Kate Fagan weighed in during Monday’s “SportsCenter” on United States Women’s star soccer player Megan Rapinoe’s decision to not stand during the pre-game national anthem, just like San Francisco 49ers star Colin Kaepernick.
According to Fagan, Rapinoe “extends the conversation” of racial injustice to a new demographic since soccer is a predominantly white sport in the United States.
“Megan opens up the conversation to a new demographic, and obviously most people around the US and worldwide as you heard even in China with President Obama are hearing the conversation,” Fagan said. “Now there’s a whole new group of fans, perhaps some of them and more of them predominantly white, Megan Rapinoe fans, who now have to consider how they feel about Megan Rapinoe making the stance, which in turn requires them to consider even more in-depth how they feel about Colin Kaepernick’s protest about racial injustice in this country. So I think Megan Rapinoe simply kneeling extends the conversation to a new demographic in a more in-depth way.”
