ESPN’s Van Pelt on A-Rod: He Created an Image of His Own Imagination — You Get the Sense He Hoped It Was All True

During the Monday night “SportsCenter” broadcast on ESPN, host Scott Van Pelt reacted to New York Yankees star Alex Rodriguez’s announced end to a polarizing 22-year career.

While Rodriguez put up Hall of Fame numbers in his career, his legacy will be overshadowed by the 2014 Biogenesis doping scandal, his use of performance-enhancing drugs and his dishonesty.

“[Rodriguez] created an image of his own imagination and you get the sense that he hoped it was all true,” Van Pelt said.

He then added, “Anywhere else you look during that era you mostly find a complicated collection of numbers. They’re stats that likely aren’t going to get Rodriguez, a man who was so concerned with his baseball legacy, into baseball heaven.”
