Saturday on CNN’s “Smerconish,” conservative commentator Pat Buchanan offered his thoughts on presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump’s potential vice-presidential picks and the upcoming Republican National Convention in Cleveland in two weeks.
Host Michael Smerconish noted the past two GOP presidents and the past GOP presidential nominees won’t be attending the convention, to which Buchanan explained that Trump’s campaign was an insurrection and that the insurrection was the political establishment of the Republican Party, which included former Presidents George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) and former Gov. Mitt Romney (R-MA).
As for the vice-presidential pick, Buchanan explained that since the nature of Trump’s candidacy was an insurrection, picking a moderate candidate wouldn’t be the way to go. Instead, Buchanan suggested Gov. Chris Christie (R-NJ) or former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-GA), which would be a contrast to a possible Democratic ticket of Hillary Clinton and Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA).
“As I said, he is conducting an insurrection and so when you doing something like that, you don’t look for the moderate ticket to make us look good on Capitol Hill,” Buchanan said. “You go all-in, and if he picked a Chris Christie or a Newt Gingrich, he is saying to Hillary Rodham Clinton and Elizabeth Warren, ‘Let’s get it on, you are over here, and we are over here, and let’s get it on and let the American people decide which way to go.’ And you will have real political clarity.”
