Friday on CNBC’s “Squawk Box,” Richard Haass, the president of the Council on Foreign Relations, criticized the outcome of yesterday’s vote in the United Kingdom, which favored those looking to leave the European Union.
Haass speculated that Scotland would leave the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland would reunite with Ireland, which he said would deem Great Britain to no longer be “Great,” but “Little Britain” instead.
Haass also accused British voters of playing with history since the European Union was part of the equation of maintaining peace in Europe.
“It’s easy to sound melodramatic, but the European project is three quarters of a century old, and people take its peace and prosperity for granted,” Haass said. “But this is playing with history, and people are going to look back on this and they’re going to say, ‘This was a colossal mistake.'”
