Wednesday during a town hall broadcasted on PBS from Elkhart, IN hosted by the network’s Gwen Ifill, President Barack Obama discussed the candidacy of presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump.
Ifill asked Obama about his reluctance to mention Trump by name to which Obama chalked up as a lack of need of Trump being mention and that what he has said is “consistent” with what a lot of Republicans have said about him.
Partial transcript as follows:
IFILL: Why don’t you mention Donald Trump by name?
OBAMA: You know he seems to do a good job mentioning his own name. So, you know, I think I’ll let him do his advertising for him.
IFILL: Do you consider at all that any of the support for him is backlash against you personally?
OBAMA: Well, here is one thing I would say and I just spoke about this at the local high school. I think Trump is a nominee or the more colorful character than some of the other Republican elected officials, But a lot of the story he is telling, is entirely consistent with what folks have been saying about me, about the general story they have been telling about the economy for the last seven-and-a-half, the last 10, last 20 or the last 30 years.
